About Marsh Uganda
Marsh Uganda was incorporated in Uganda in 1997 as Liberty Insurance Brokers Limited, a company wholly owned by Ugandans. In 2004 Alexander Forbes Group of South Africa acquired a 55% shareholding stake in Liberty necessitating a name change to Alexander Forbes Uganda Limited. After this acquisition the company grew more rapidly making it Uganda’s largest insurance broker in market share and revenue terms.

Later in 2012, Marsh entered the Ugandan insurance market when its parent company Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC) acquired Alexander Forbes Group broking interests in Uganda heralding a new dawn in the local insurance market.

Today, Marsh Uganda serves a wide spectrum of clients who include individuals, public entities, SMEs, local companies and multinational companies. It remains a leading broker offering a full range of unrivalled risk and insurance broking services.

Our Country

Uganda is a land-locked country located in East Africa.  It is governed under a multiparty democratic system of government.  The legal system is based on common law derived from its British colonial heritage.  The population is around 32 million people, of which 50% are below the age of 16 years.  Population growth rate is around 3%.  The country recently discovered commercially viable quantities of oil and plans are underway to develop the sector.  Over the last 20 years, the economy has grown at an average rate of 6%.  The national currency is the Uganda shilling and the Capital city is Kampala, English and Swahili are the official languages.

Our Client Mix

Our clients mainly comprise large corporate companies that have both local and multinational entities. We also broker a sizeable number of small to medium-size companies, as well as some personal lines business.

Our overall service strengths include:

There are 22 short term and 8 long term insurance companies. There are also 13 Health maintenance and membership organizations and one insurer. In 2014, the industry grew by 9%. As for insurance brokers, there are 31 and many agents for insurers. The non-life business makes up around 85% of premium volume. We are the largest broker both in terms of market share and income.

Our Regulator
The industry is regulated by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda under the Insurance Amendment Act. Recently, Parliament passed the Retirement Benefits Authority Act which provides for the regulation of Retirement Benefit Schemes in Uganda.

Our Business Principles and Practices

The ToE is introduced by a short Letter of Engagement (LoE) addressing key provisions such as services, remuneration, term/termination and limitation on liability.
