Our Country

Welcome to Marsh Malawi, the powerful number one insurance broking and risk management firm in the country. Marsh began operations in Malawi through the acquisition of Alexander Forbes in 2012 and the combined resources resulted in the organization being the preeminent risk mitigation company in Malawi. The company’s history dates back to 1984 when then Malawi Insurance Brokers Limited (MIBRO) was formed. In 1997 the Alexander Forbes Group of South Africa purchased the company from Lonhro Group of Companies. Currently our head office is in Blantyre, located at MPICO House, along Glyn Jones Road. We also have a regional office in the Capital City of Lilongwe situated in Teveta House. Blantyre is the main commercial hub of Malawi.

With a total staff compliment of 24, we have extensive in house insurance experience and knowledge. In addition to this we have access to Marsh’s respected global industry and specialist practice teams thus enabling us to provide unparalleled solutions for large and complex risks. Our services include risk management, arranging and placement of insurance protection and a truly world class claims service experience. Our client base includes government departments, NGO’s, multinational companies and the financial sector. Our clients benefit from global benchmarking and sector expertise, access to Marsh’s specialist practice teams and the leverage we provide within the insurance industry by virtue of the Marsh brand. Also our constant interaction with the various insurance markets and insurance companies makes us thoroughly familiar with the capabilities of the individual companies and thus adds to the value preposition that we bring to the client.

Our Client Mix

The market has 8 short terms insurance companies and 5 long term insurance companies in operation. Recently we have seen the incoming of 2 new companies mainly targeting the SMEs sector.  As for Brokers currently there are about 13 and a large number of agents .Some major insurance companies have significant South African, Zimbabwean and Kenyan players’ shareholding  whilst other are local.

Our Regulators

The insurance & pension industry is regulated by the Registrar of Insurance and Pensions who is the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi. For the past two years the Registrar has issued a number of Directives to guide the operation of Insurance companies and Brokers.

Our Business Principles and Practices

The Marsh Malawi Terms of Engagement (ToE) (Version 1: June 2013) is based on the Marsh UK ToE, suitably modified to comply with the legal and compliance requirements of Malawi.

The ToE is introduced by a short Letter of Engagement (LoE) addressing key provisions such as services, remuneration, term/termination and limitation on liability.
